Architecture: A Visual Feast

Vernacular (1819 – 1848)
Many of the settlers who came west to Galena were from New England and the upper Middle Atlantic states. The houses they built resembled the styles common to their native regions. However, the building materials they used were those available in the area. The combination of traditional designs and local materials is termed “folk” or Vernacular style.
Greek Revival (1832-1860)
Greek Revival made its appearance in America in 1779 and was to become the most popular of the pre-Civil War era. The style utilizes the Greek orders of columns- Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. Buildings consist of either simple blocks or combination of blocks usually forming T- or L-shaped homes. The classic temple form, with a portico across the front and low-pitched roofs absent of dormers is characteristic of this style.
Italianate (1848-1860)
The Italianate came to America in 1837. Buildings of this style usually consist of well-defined, asymmetrical blocks of various elevations. Roofs are low pitched and have ample overhangs for supporting brackets. Often buildings have a square, off-center tower, cupola or belvedere. Bay windows are common.
Gothic Revival (1849-1861)
Gothic Revival was first introduced to America in 1799. The universal feature of this style is the pointed arch. Other features are pinnacles, battlements and window tracery. They often have steep, pointed gables with gingerbread vergeboards.
Queen Anne (1874-1898)
The Queen Anne style was introduced in America in 1874. Buildings feature high and multiple roofs and windows of many forms. Bay windows and various kinds of gables are common. Round or polygonal turrets and elaborate chimneys are important features.
Galena Traditional Style (1864-c. 1900)
Greek Revival style homes were not built in Galena after 1861. However, houses with the similar form, floor plan and arrangement of doors windows and roofs were built. These same houses featured the Gothic Revival or Italianate style of detailing on porches and roof eaves.
